The creation of the documentary, Brunswick Stew: Georgia Named Her;
Georgia Claims Her (broadcast over Georgia Public
Broadcasting on June 26th, 2005) had the effect of connecting
the Brunswick Stewbilee Festival held annually in Brunswick,
GA. with it's roots in the folklife and
folklore of this Southern foodways tradition. A new
and vigorous effort is being made in 2005 to attract stewmasters
from all over Georgia to this folk heritage festival and
cook-off that has moved from May to
October.
What distinguishes the Brunswick Stewbilee Festival is the way it
recognizes, celebrates and honors the folk heritage tradition and
roots of Brunswick stew by bringing together in a head-to-head
competition stew masters from all over the state and
region (and even Virginia!) Whether these stew masters bring
a Brunswick stew tradition that has recently been
established, or that has roots dating back to a family or
historic stew tradition passed down from generation-to-generation,
the Brunswick Stewbilee Festival will be a special place for
the public to come taste Brunswick stew in a way that
celebrates it's deep-South folk heritage foodways roots.
